This paper investigates a college admissions problem in which colleges use a strategy to limit students’ choice set, namely the conflicting strategy, to prevent multiple applications. We develop a discrete model and use a series of experiments to explore this problem. We argue that the colleges’ prestige and students’ uncertainty about admissions outcomes are two important factors. The model and experimental results demonstrate that when the uncertainty is high and the prestige difference is low, a lower-ranked college can enroll more desired students by using the conflicting strategy. Moreover, through the conflicting strategy, more students are screened into their preferred colleges, which could result in an increase of the aggregate welfare of students.
